Commercial Manager (Infrastructure – NEC Contracts)

Job Overview

The Commercial Manager in the infrastructure sector, working on NEC contracts, oversees financial, contractual, and risk management aspects of construction projects. The role ensures project activities align with NEC guidelines, which are widely used in both public and private sectors. The ideal candidate will have extensive infrastructure project experience, strong negotiation skills, and a deep understanding of NEC contracts.

Key Responsibilities

1. Contract Management:
   • Manage NEC contracts (ECC, PSC, etc.) throughout the project lifecycle.
   • Ensure compliance with contractual obligations and standards.
   • Lead negotiations on variations, claims, and final accounts.
2. Cost Control & Financial Management:
   • Monitor budgets, forecasts, and costs to ensure profitability.
   • Implement cost control measures and lead financial reporting.
3. Risk Management:
   • Identify and manage project risks within the NEC framework.
   • Collaborate on risk mitigation strategies and maintain risk registers.
4. Stakeholder Management:
   • Act as the main point of contact for commercial issues with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers.
   • Build and maintain stakeholder relationships and support project decision-making.
5. Change & Claims Management:
   • Administer change control processes and manage compensation events.
   • Prepare and negotiate claims and variations, ensuring timely documentation.
6. Procurement & Supply Chain:
   • Support procurement activities, including subcontractor selection and tenders.
   • Monitor subcontractor performance and manage supply chain relationships.
7. Reporting & Documentation:
   • Prepare commercial reports for senior management.
   • Maintain accurate records of all commercial activities and documentation.
8. Leadership & Teamwork:
   • Lead and mentor junior team members.
   • Collaborate with project teams to align commercial and project goals.

Skills & Qualifications

• Deep knowledge of NEC3/NEC4 contracts.
• Financial expertise in budgeting and forecasting.
• Strong negotiation, risk management, and analytical skills.
• Proven leadership and stakeholder management ability.
• Excellent communication and attention to detail.
• Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or related field.
• MRICS, MCIOB, or similar certification preferred.
• 7-10 years of experience in infrastructure commercial management, with at least 3 years on NEC contracts.
• Experience with cost management software and ERP systems.
